Terms of membership
Plain language, because terms nobody reads protect nobody.
Version 1.0 ·
Owner: this is a structured draft, not legal advice. Have counsel review it and insert the legal entity, jurisdiction and governing law before relying on it.
1. Who you are contracting with
CIO Cafe is operated by [Legal entity · registered address · company number] (“we”, “us”). These terms apply between that entity and you as a member or applicant.
2. What membership is
Membership is a personal, non-transferable invitation to attend CIO Cafe tables and receive Field Briefs. It is granted to you, not to your employer, and it does not transfer when you change jobs — though it normally continues, because it followed you rather than the company.
3. What we provide
- Access to peer tables, subject to availability and to conflict-free seating.
- Anonymised Field Briefs produced by tables.
- Human review of your application within two business days.
We do not guarantee a seat at any particular table, a particular set of peers, or any business outcome.
4. What you agree to
You agree to the house rules, which form part of these terms. In particular you agree to the Chatham House Rule: you may use what you hear, but you may not reveal the identity or affiliation of any participant. This obligation survives the end of your membership and has no expiry date.
You also confirm that you do not sell technology, services or advisory to the audience CIO Cafe convenes, and you agree to tell us promptly if that changes.
5. Fees
[Membership terms and fees, once set] Where a fee applies, you may cancel at any time in the same number of steps it took to join, with no retention call and no cancellation fee. See pricing.
6. Ending a membership
You may leave at any time by emailing [email protected]. We may end a membership for a breach of the house rules, following the process set out there, or if you no longer meet the eligibility criteria. Breaking the Chatham House Rule ends a membership immediately.
7. Your information
Described in the privacy summary and the trust centre. In short: your data is never sold, never shared with sponsors, and deleted on request.
8. Content and contributions
Field Briefs are produced by us from what happens at a table, and are published anonymised. You keep everything you bring; you grant us permission to publish an anonymised account of the discussion that cannot reasonably identify you or your organisation.
9. Liability
What you hear at a table is peer opinion, not professional, legal or financial advice. Decisions you make remain yours. [Counsel: insert limitation of liability appropriate to the jurisdiction]
10. Changes
These terms are versioned. Material changes are announced to members before they take effect, and the version number here changes with them.
11. Contact
